Physiotherapy for autism spectrum disorder

Autistic syndrome is a developmental disorder due to perceptual disorders that is often diagnosed in children due to abnormal perception.
There are abnormalities in the processing of the sensory stimuli. These mostly lead to communication problems. Affected children perceive the environment and themselves differently and develop differently according to that.
Physiotherapy has proven to be an useful method of treatment to promote the processing of sensory stimuli.
Physiotherapy in the sense of sensorimotor integration supports an adequate processing and reaction to said sensory impressions.

„If you only feel insufficiently where you are in the room, you can hardly relate to others.“

Bobath therapy for children

The neural system has the ability to learn for a lifetime. After damage, the plasticity of the brain enables new capacities to be activated. The Bobath concept takes advantage of this. The concept was developed by the couple Bertha and Dr. Karel Bobath.

However, the idea was not to use schematic exercises as a therapy, as seen in other concepts, but to use the existing mobility as a basis for the newly learned.
The first step of the treatment consists of a detailed movement analysis of the patient. The movement behavior is analyzed in different situations in comparison to healthy motor movement. The therapy is adapted to the patient’s abilities and current state of development.

The main focus of Bobath therapy is above all in the area of neurological diseases such as brain damage, developmental disorders and patients with perception and/or coordination disorders.

Vojta Therapy

Vojta therapy was developed by the child neurologist Prof. Dr. Vojta in the early 1950s. Vojta therapy stimulates the brain to activate “inherent, stored movement patterns” and to export them as coordinated movements to the trunk and limb muscles. The reflex locomotion (also called reflex movement) is an ideal basic motor program for the therapy of a movement disorder according to Vojta. The aim of the therapeutic use of reflex locomotion is to pave the way for automatic control of the posture, the support function of the extremities and the coordinated muscle activities required for this.

Osteopathy

The principle of osteopathy relates not only to the mobility of the body as a whole but also to the histoid’s own movements, i.e. to the movement of the individual body parts and organs and their interaction.

„Osteopathy does not want to cure illness, but to find health“

Osteopathy should activate the child’s resources so that a basis for a balanced interaction of all organ systems is created.

For this, the osteopath uses only their hands and after extensive diagnostics, blockages are released using gentle, manual techniques.
A basis for self-regulation and sensorimotor development is laid for the autistic child.

Osteopathy can create the basis for healthy sensorimotor development. Physiotherapy accompanies the child in its developmental steps and continues to set befitting stimuli.
